Community and Social Impact
T'BoliThe T'Boli indigenous tribe originates from Lake Sebu in South Cotabato. We have been with this community for over 18 years even before Kaayo was born.Skills known for:The T'boli are known for their back-loom textile Tinalak, woven from tie-dyed abaca fiber. Besides woven fabrics, they are also skilled in embroidery and beadwork which are highly sought after. Collaboration:We have partnered with them in incorporating their textiles and hand beading into our products and adpating it to modernized fashion. Social Impact:In the beginning, the mother-daugther team that we work with had almost nothing. They were not able to pay electricity and some basic everyday needs. The daughter Jie Jie was ready to go out of the country to look for work. After we started Kaayo, 3 years later, they have built their own home in Lake Sebu and have set up a working room with 25 beaders who they are able to give monthly allowances to plus a commission per piece. Bagobo TagabawaThe tribe originates from Bitaug Davao Del Sur. We have been with this community for over 2 years.Skills known for:For hundreds of years, Bagobo Tagabawa creates Inabal, a weaving process that is hand-woven out of abaca fiber. This technique has been passed down from generations to generations. Their designs evolve around the community and family. Collaboration:We have partnered with them in incorporating their textiles and hand beading into our products and adapting it to modernized fashion. Social Impact:We started working with the Bagobo Tagabawa from Bitaug when we started a movement to look for new tribes that needed help. Last year we met around 5 beaders/designers. TagakaoloThe tribe originates from Davao Del Sur. We have been with this community for over 1 year.Skills known for:The Tagakaolo are skilled in basket weaving, embroidery, loom weaving, blanket weaving, headdresses, beaded necklaces and others. They make their jackets out of abaca and decorate them with mother-of-pearl discs lined with glass beads. Collaboration:We have partnered with them in incorporating their textiles and hand beading into our products and adapting it to modernized fashion. Move EdWe Have been working with the Alex for 6 Months.Skills known for:Alex is a talented graphic designer whose advocacy is for her MovEd children. Collaboration:As a fan of Kaayo, she reached out - wanting to know more about Mindanao. From there, she fell in love and together we are looking to do a small collection of her graphic designs, beaded and embroidered by the T’boli tribe.
